Web Design Magazines
Here in the UK there are a growing number of publications based around the topic of internet use and web design. PWD Magazine, [dot]net, Web Designer, Computer Arts, Digit, Web User... the list goes on. However most of these magazines cater for the hobbyist majority as opposed to the professional crowd. Of these magazines [dot]net is my personal preference, and on the same stroke I believe it to be the most web design mature of the selection available.
If we were to see a shift of popularity from hobby to profession do you think we would see a new wave of magazines focusing on the professional web designer? Furthermore are you happy with the current selection of magazines available at this moment?

I use to read web user a lot but it started to have much less to do with design and more on downloading music and the like. I dont really raed them much any more but that might be because like you said there isnt a very good selection out there. I arnt really a professional, just an enthusiast, but id like to see a little more variation of there I think

As a .net magazine writer, I'm obviously a bit biased. But I think that .net - with it's recent relaunch - will see a shift towards the professional web designer/developer. It's now a lot less "look at the animation tools in Flash" and heading towards strong webdev articles. It's a lot closer to the current development scene than it's ever been in my opinion.

I dont really think you would see new publications, but rather, a shift in the content of the current publications. Im in the US, and possess absolutely no coding or graphic design skills AT ALL, so i dont really read these types of zines.

@Rik: I think you're right about the shift of .net. I was definitely impressed by it's redesign and I think we will be seeing more professionally based articles in future. I personally would also like to see more articles based around DOM and Javascript. dot net see to be going quite heavy on the Ajax projects at the moment.

But that's not entirely a new thing - for example a few months before the redesign Jeremy Keith wrote a great piece for us on DOM Scripting, and we'd also looked in depth at many of the important issues for web professional, such as accessibility (the PAS78 doc in particular), usability (Jesse James Garrett piece) and designing for mobile (Charles McCathie-Neville from Opera).
Now the magazine has got a swanky new look I hope that it continues to attract a lot more of the readers that the team works had to prepare good content for.

Hey Lisa. That is exactly why ive always preferred .net as opposed to the other mags out there. There is some good, full-bodied information in it for professionals as well as hobbiests. You did a really good job as editor and the redesign is fantastic.
